A great success, congratulations!

New Professorships at FEM

Just right in time for the start of the summer semester, Prof. Dr. Lena Tonzer started her position at the FEM, and became head of the newly established Chair of Economics, in particular Macroeconomics. Through a very competitive selection procedure according to the relevant guidelines of the State University Act (Landeshochschulgesetz), she succeeded out of approx. 50 highly qualified applicants. After the call, and the subsequent position negotiations Prof. L. Tonzer finally decided to move from the Netherlands, where she was researching and teaching at the renowned VU Amsterdam, to Magdeburg. Here in Magdeburg she will contribute her expertise and commitment to the FEM research cluster CEPA as well as to the faculty's economics and business study programs. Welcome to our school!

Furthermore, another new lecturer is enriching our school. By April 1, the start of the summer semester 2023, Dr. Arne Heinemann was appointed as the substitute lecturer and chair holder of “Business Administrations”, particular Operations Management, by the faculty. After a short-time transfer of the previous chair holder to the RWTH Aachen University, FEM students can await a list of interesting courses offered by Dr. Heinold. A warm welcome to Dr. Heinold as well!

Prof. Horst Gischer and Prof. Karl-Heinz Paqué retired

After more than 25 years of extraordinary engagement at the FEM, Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Karl-Heinz Paqué, chair holder of International Economics and Prof. Dr. Horst Gischer, chair holder of Monetary Economics and Public Finance started their retirement period in April 2023. Two extremely distinguished characters, academically outstanding, broadly interested and networked, opinionated personalities, who have decisively shaped the image of the faculty over the aforementioned period, left our school.

Prof. Paqué, acted as the Dean of the faculty for about eight years, namely from 2010 to 2018. As a former Minister of Finance from 2002 up to 2006, and as a member of the state parliament from 2002 to 2008 he influenced the politics of the State of Saxony-Anhalt quiet a lot. Since 2018, he is holding the position as the head of the board of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.

Prof. Gischer, the former head of the FEM Audit Committee, was the initiator and Executive Director of the Research Center for Savings Bank Development e. V. (FZSE) for the last 20 years. Furthermore, he was organizing the Magdeburg Financial Market Dialogue, which last year celebrated its 13th edition, and so on and so on …

But besides the melancholy about leaving, some good news to tell: "You never go the way in a row ..." Prof. Paqué is still giving a lecture in the upcoming summer semester. He will stay, at least for some time, some classes and will move into his "emeriti office" in building 22. On the other hand Prof. Gischer will stay connected with us, from one side through his activities at the FZSE, and from the other side through his involvement in various doctoral and habilitation procedures.

With high respect, and gratitude we look back on the academic vita and the personal commitment of the aforementioned. We are looking forward to the new ways of partnerships and cooperation!
Both of them, Prof. Paqué and Prof. Gischer, will remain as members of the OVGU in regard of the statue of OVGU, ex officio, so it calls, for life.
